This week’s competition will be contested at the Riviera Country Club, which has hosted the tournament for decades. It will feature the year’s strongest field to date in 2011, with no amateurs involved, and will played at a single course, unlike three of the events so far this year. In essence, most of the players consider this the first “real” tournament of the year, without all the frivolities and celebrities present in the six earlier PGA tournaments.
About the Riviera Country Club
The Riviera Country Club features 7298 yards, and plays to a par of 71. Designed in 1927 by George Thomas, it has been a venue of championship golf in Southern California. Known at first as the Los Angeles Open (Pacific Palisades is a community inside Los Angeles), it was once dubbed “Hogan’s Alley” by three-time masters champ Jimmy Demaret, after the famed Ben Hogan won there in 1948 and 1949, and then added the U. S. Open at Riviera in 1949 as well.
In addition, there have been several movies filmed there. The movie, Pat and Mike, starring Katherine Hepburn and Babe Zaharias, was filmed at Riviera; as was The Caddy, with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin; and Follow the Sun, featuring Glenn Ford and Anne Baxter. The Caddy had a cameo appearance by the great Ben Hogan himself.
